Provincial Key R&D Program Projects of 2016 Achieve Major Breakthroughs in Municipal Sludge Disposal

With the continuous development of the economy and society, the amount of urban sewage treatment is increasing day by day, and the municipal sludge produced by sewage treatment plants is also growing rapidly.According to relevant statistics, in 2015, China's municipal sludge output reached 35 million tons.It is estimated that during the "Thirteenth Five-Year Plan" period, China will produce about 400 million tons of municipal sludge in total, and the sludge treatment and disposal market size will reach 189.2 billion yuan.However, municipal sludge disposal is still one of the world's difficult problems in the environmental protection field, although there are currently methods such as composting, landfilling, land use, incineration, building material utilization, and various derived disposal methods, they are often inefficient and costly, and even cause various secondary pollution.

In 2016, the Provincial Department of Science and Technology, focusing on the key technical bottlenecks in our province's ecological civilization construction and the implementation of the State Council's "Ten Measures for Water", supported the high-end development of the environmental protection industry, and in response to the key technical issues of sludge disposal, supported Hunan Dingjiu Energy & Environment Technology Co., Ltd. to undertake the key R&D project "Preparation of Biochar-Based High-Efficiency Composite Conditioner and Its Research on Remediation of Heavy Metal Contaminated Soil", helping the company accelerate the industrialization process of its independently developed integrated sludge continuous carbonization furnace technology.

After more than a year of effort, the company built a pilot production line with a daily processing capacity of 10 tons using integrated sludge continuous carbonization technology at Xiangtan County Urban Sewage Treatment Plant, and it has been in continuous operation for 3 months.Compared with sludge treatment technologies such as anaerobic fermentation, incineration for power generation, and building material utilization, this technology has six major characteristics and advantages: (1) The sludge completes the drying, dry distillation, and carbonization process in a closed equipment, with no secondary pollution. (2) The sludge is carbonized into a non-polluting, usable carbon substance, achieving harmlessness and reduction. (3) The sludge carbonization process fully utilizes the sludge's own heat, with extremely low external energy consumption, and can recover thermal energy through condensed water.(4) The biochar produced by sludge carbonization can be used for soil remediation materials, steel plant auxiliary materials, etc., generating high value-added economic benefits.(5) The production equipment adopts DJ modular combination, with low operation and maintenance costs.(6) The production equipment can directly process sludge with a moisture content of 50-80%, with strong adaptability.

Currently, the project has applied for 20 national invention patents and 3 PCT international patents, since the pilot production line of the project was put into operation, it has received high attention from domestic peers, and many sewage treatment plant operators have visited to discuss cooperation intentions. After the large-scale promotion of the technical achievements of this project, it will bring new ideas to the municipal sludge industry and also provide experience for environmental protection enterprises in our province to seize the high-end market through scientific and technological innovation.
