 Sewage treatment is familiar to most people, but how to handle the sludge from sewage, and how to turn waste into treasure? At the semi-finals of the 6th China Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition (Hunan Division) and the 4th Hunan Province Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, the integrated sludge continuous carbonization technology developed by Hunan Dingjiu Energy & Environment Technology Co., Ltd. helps "sludge" achieve resource recycling.

  In the core area of the Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan region, Hunan Dingjiu Energy & Environment Technology Co., Ltd. invested in the construction of a 10 tons/day sludge continuous carbonization demonstration project. The project covers an area of 200 square meters and is adjacent to the sludge dewatering workshop of a sewage treatment plant. Through integrated sludge continuous carbonization technology, sludge with 80% moisture content and rice husks are mixed and carbonized into biochar. The waste heat generated during production can supply external heating, and the produced rice husk charcoal can be used as insulation agent in steel plants, and sludge biochar as reducing agent in metallurgical smelting, achieving sludge resource utilization.

  "Our goal is to achieve reduction, stabilization, harmlessness, and resource utilization in sludge treatment and disposal. Currently, the focus is on reduction; further exploring resource utilization is our direction of effort. ." Jiang Liangjun, General Manager of Hunan Dingjiu Energy & Environment Technology Co., Ltd., stated that sludge disposal is not limited to harmless treatment, but the value of resource utilization should also be recognized.

  "In exploring the resource utilization of sludge, we have found that the biochar produced after standard sludge disposal can be used as carbon-based fertilizer, soil heavy metal remediator, and metallurgical reducing agent, which has very good effects on improving soil, mitigating soil acidification and compaction, and retaining fertilizer ." In the view of Ma Guiquan, Operations Manager of Hunan Dingjiu Energy & Environment Technology Co., Ltd., the biochar produced from sludge resource utilization has a wide range of applications, and its prospects will be incalculable.

  In Qingshanpu Town, Changsha County, five mu of early rice test field applied with biochar produced by Dingjiu's integrated sludge continuous carbonization technology achieved a bumper harvest this year. As indicated by test results from Professor Luo Huili of Hunan Agricultural University, who cooperated with the company in soil heavy metal remediation research, the biochar obviously influences the adsorption of heavy metals in soil. Ma Guiquan said, the experiments prove that, to a certain extent, the biochar produced through harmless and resource-oriented sludge disposal helps inhibit the absorption of cadmium by rice.

  Hunan Dingjiu Energy & Environment Technology Co., Ltd. has applied for more than 20 national invention patents around the integrated sludge continuous carbonization technology, and the applied patents cover sludge, garbage, kitchen waste, low-rank coal, oil sludge, straw, etc., and currently 2 patents have been approved. This R&D achievement is inseparable from the team's countless days and nights of repeated experiments and demonstrations.

  The exploration of sludge resource utilization has gone through more than 5 years. The R&D team has continuously searched for raw materials and overcome difficulties. "R&D personnel repeatedly look for test methods in trucks of sludge, enduring the pungent odor and having to endure skin itching caused by making insulation materials." During the more than 5 years, the R&D team worked hard and practically, letting facts and data speak, and broke through technical difficulties, leading the industry.

  At present, the energy-saving and environmental protection industry is continually heating up, and the field of sludge treatment and disposal has broad prospects for development. The innovation of integrated sludge continuous carbonization technology not only protects the environment but also extends the industrial chain, realizing recycling of resources.
